Introduction to the Enneagram

If we observe ourselves truthfully and non-judgmentally, seeing the mechanisms of our personality in action, we can wake up, and our lives can be a miraculous unfolding of beauty and joy. Don Richard Riso

A centuries-old psychological system with roots in sacred tradition, the Enneagram can be an invaluable guide in your journey toward self-understanding and self-development. This short blog series has been developed using numerous resources, but if you’re just starting with the Enneagram, we suggest you pick up a copy of this book:

In The Essential Enneagram, Stanford University Medical School clinical professor of psychiatry David Daniels and counseling psychologist Virginia Price offer the only scientifically developed Enneagram test based upon extensive research combined with a self-discovery and personal-development guide.

Why the Enneagram?

Over the years, I’ve benefited from a variety of personality tests. Myers-Briggs, Strength-Finders, and others are just a few tests I’ve taken over the years. All have resulted in some good information and have helped me along the way both personally and as I worked alongside others. But it wasn’t until I was exposed to the Enneagram (in 2013) when I really saw the amazing power of self-awareness and how beneficial this tool can be when used in group settings.

Through the help of this personality tool, I’ve become much more aware of the uniqueness of my personality type (The Helper – Enneagram #2). And as I’ve worked with the information I’ve gleaned, it’s helped me to a clearer awareness of the good/the bad/and the ugly of my personality, helping me (and others around me) to encourage me to move from practicing the worst traits of the Enneagram #2 to what some Enneagram teachers call the redemptive, or mature characteristics of The Helper.

For that, I’m thankful! (And so are my wife, my kids, and my co-workers!)

For me, the Enneagram has been a real game-changer. It’s my hope this ancient personality tool will be as helpful to you (and your circle of influence) as well!
