Sustainable Faith Enneagram School

Are you unsure about who you really are and why you are here?

Are you frustrated with personality tests that rarely produce long-lasting, positive transformation?

Are you hoping that there must be more to your Christian faith?

Sustainable Faith Enneagram School: Discovering Your True Self

Four quarterly one-day retreats – twelve months – one beautiful retreat location!

Two “pilot” retreats coming this fall/winter 2019/2020 to the Heartland!

As we see it, the spiritual practice of retreat has largely been lost in our culture. Of course, people still get away, but usually those away times are full of nonstop activity, closely tethered to media and tech devices, and, if listening to someone, the content is usually information-driven, focusing more on ‘doing’ versus ‘being.’ Here is your invitation to a truer retreat; an opportunity “to come apart before you come apart.”

Sustainable Faith Enneagram School (ES): Discovering Your True Self is your opportunity to:

  • COME, REST, and REFLECT on your life with God, the nature of the spiritual life, and your true self in God.
  • COMMUNITY with people who desire the same journey you do.
  • TRANSFORMATION using the Enneagram, a Christ-centered tool that has helped transform people’s relationship with God for centuries.

In keeping with its name, Enneagram School: Discovering Your True Self (ES) introduces people to a stream of the Christian faith that values and cultivates contemplative practices as a way of growing in awareness of God, self, and mission. The purpose of this formation journey is to help leaders grow in self-awareness, virtue, and love and then put that growth into play within their families and organizations. In family systems parlance, it’s about becoming a self-differentiated and non-anxious presence, a person who engages in the most responsible and authentically loving way with others in the system (family, church, organization). In gospel parlance, it’s about losing one’s life to find it, about being the “new creature” in Christ. Consequently, this is a journey of transformation, not a journey simply to acquire more data or techniques.

Everyone of us is shadowed by an illusory person: a false self. Our reality, our true self, is hidden in what appears to us to be nothingness. We can rise above this unreality and recover our hidden reality. God Himself begins to live in me not only as my Creator but as my other and true self. Thomas Merton

What is the Enneagram?

Enneagram names-Color

The Enneagram is a psychological/spiritual inventory tool that provides insight into the dynamics within us that influence how we live, relate to others and do our work. It focuses on our core motivations in life, not our roles. Some would say the Enneagram addresses the question of “why are we doing the things we do?” Another author says, “The Enneagram explains why things aren’t going so well for us!”

‘Ennea’ means ‘nine’. ‘Gram’ simply means ‘written out.’ The concepts of the Enneagram date back to the 3rd and 4th centuries. Originally based on the seven deadly sins, it is not exclusively a “Christian” tool but is used in most major religious traditions. Today, pastors, church leaders, and campus ministers across the United States are studying the Enneagram to better understand themselves, their leaders, and the dynamic personalities driving their churches and organizations. During our retreats, we will explore the nine personality types of the Enneagram and discuss how they are expressed in our lives and our relationships.

Our ES Module Overview.

Required Reading prior to Weekend #1: The Gift of Being Yourself: The Sacred Call to Self Discovery by David G. Benner. Suggested Reading prior to Weekend #1: Invitation to Retreat: The Gift and Necessity of Time Away with God by Ruth Haley Barton.

Weekend #1: Our Journey into Self-Awareness: Using material found in Benner’s book (above), we’ll introduce you to your true self, encouraging you to slow down your busy life so that you might better discern both the positive and negative patterns in your life that make you who you are. We’ll explore the three power centers of the Enneagram and demonstrate how your triune brain (Head, Heart, Gut) plays into the good/bad, and ugly of your life, both past and present. Your book to ponder on before next time will be The Road Back To You: An Enneagram Journey To Self-Discovery by Ian Morgan Cron & Suzanne Stabile.

Weekend #2: Embracing Your Enneagram Number: We continue our journey into self-awareness by better understanding the nine personality types of the Enneagram and thus, we begin embracing the specific Enneagram number that seems the best fit for who we are. This module we will give you ample opportunity to work/pray/ponder on the inner workings of the nine Enneagram numbers. By module’s end, our hope is that you will walk away embracing your Enneagram number and ready to explore the inner workings of that personality type. Your book to ponder on before next time will be The Sacred Enneagram: Finding Your Unique Path to Spiritual Growth by Christopher L. Heuertz.

Weekend #3: Working Toward Inner-Transformation: Now that we’re becoming comfortable with our Enneagram number, we work on embracing the inner workings of your Enneagram personality type. In this module, we’ll discuss the finer details of the Enneagram such as wings, arrows, harmony triads, immaturity vs. maturity, consolation vs. desolation, and more. Your book to ponder on before next time will be Spiritual Rhythms for the Enneagram: A Handbook for Harmony and Transformation, Adele & Doug Calhoun, Clare & Scott Loughrige.

Weekend #4: Living Out Your True Self: Now, it’s time to embrace the on-going journey into wholeness and transformation using the Enneagram as a Christ-centered tool. We conclude this fourth module by offering an overview of where Christ might take us on mission with this greater self-awareness, using the wisdom of the Enneagram along the way.

Here’s some quotes from those who attended recent retreats…

“The Enneagram has been a blessing to me personally and professionally. Learning my Enneatype helped several puzzle pieces of my life fall into place and has given me clarity and the tools to lean in on the God-designed aspects of myself that help me cope with challenges and best serve Him.”

“The day was very enlightening and refreshing.  Through light direction, we were able to come to a place where the Spirit could bring truth about our current condition and the direction that the Lord is leading.  It was encouraging on many levels and I would highly recommend it for people at any stage of their walk.  There is no doubt that Jesus was the leader of the day and was present and active in a very real way.”

“We got a taste of Jesus.  When we get quiet it opens up space for Him to speak to us.”

“Very helpful and revealing at the same time. (God) revealed to me some of my strengths and I was encouraged to use (those strengths) even more. I was blessed through this day.”
